Carcrash International [US]

Carcrash International is with the Cleopatra label what This Mortal Coil is with 4AD: a kind of super-group consisted the elite of the musicians of the label, concentrated around a joint project. One thus finds here Dave Roberts, bass player of Sex Gang Children; Bari-Bari and David Glass, both old Christian Death prevailing at the time in Mephisto Walz; and some additional musicians at various stages. The planing guitars of Bari-Bari, the precise and firm striking of David Glass and the low voice of Dave Roberts, serious and cordial, is placed slightly at the withdrawal in the mixing, which gives an atmosphere particular to the band, an impression of reserve which does not hide of it less one subjacent storm.

Garten Kirkhof [US]

Garten Kirhof - 'Le Dormeur - A Restrospective 1989-1994' - 2008

Garten Kirkhof was formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1989 with the intent to create, play and perform the type of music that they all liked to listen to. Garten Kirkhof was initially heavily influenced by Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees and early Christian Death. They began as a strictly Goth band, but as the years passed and guitarists were changed, other influences such as Killing Joke, Bunnydrums, Red Temple Spirits and The Chameleons, to name a few, were tapped into. So the band had gradually shifted from Goth into dark Post Punk.

The Black Angels [US]

The Black Angels are a psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas,[1] formed in May 2004. Their name derives from the Velvet Underground song "The Black Angel's Death Song".

Friday, August 5th 2007, they played at Lollapalooza in Chicago. Among other venues, they have played at SXSW 2006 & 2008 and All Tomorrow's Parties 2008. Touring partners have included the blues rock band The Black Keys and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

The group's debut LP Passover was generally well received in the underground independent rock community and was noted for its dark tones and lyrical content. A review of the Black Angels album Passover described them as "Walking in the shadows cast by Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized mastermind Jason Pierce" and compared them to The Warlocks and Black Mountain, also invoking "dirges" reminiscent of both The Velvet Underground and the 13th Floor Elevators.[1] The band's icon is a stylized/high-contrast image of Nico.

Passover included a quote in the liner notes from Edvard Munch; "Illness, insanity, and death are the black angels that kept watch over my cradle and accompanied me all my life."

In December 2007, the group announced on their blog that their second album will be released in Spring of 2008. [1]. In March 2008 a release date of May 13th was announced for their second album, Directions to See a Ghost.

The forthcoming full length album is close to completion and is due to be released world-wide in summer 2008.

Fangs on Fur [US]

Boasting a line-up that features veterans of the L.A. Goth and Punk Rock scenes (The Leaving Trains, Christian Death, Sluts for Hire, 45 Grave, The Helpful Nuns, Faith & the Muse, to name but a few...)

Mashing together the best of dark-tinted Spaghetti Western guitars, tribal rhythms and the razor-sharp hooks of '77 British punk rock, FANGS ON FUR explode into an exotic rock n' roll safari, captivating dance-floor divas and aggressive punk n' roll fans alike.

Drawing comparisons to Ennio Morricone meets Killing Joke and X-Ray Spex meets The Congo, FANGS ON FUR combine all of these elements and more to uniquely create their own lush, seething mixture of angst and passion, already topping playlists of DJ's and music fans, both internationally & in the States.

The FANGS ON FUR live experience has now become the stuff of legend; F-Boy's swirling guitar twang comes face-to-face with Miss Koko's driving bass lines & Stevyn Grey's thunderous drums. On stage, the sounds, lights and visuals all reach a roaring pinnacle with F-Girl - injecting her sing-along vocals and on-stage antics that grab audience members by the collar and pull them into a wild world of savagery, ferocity and fury.

Momento Mori UK

Originally formed in 1987 in northern England, Momento Mori UK were very active participants in the UK goth scene of the late 80's/early 90's. Soon after their formation, they were touring and gigging extensively, with bands such as Every New Dead Ghost, Sins of the Flesh, Dream Disciples, The Marionettes, Christabelle Children, and Rosetta Stone.

But whilst heavily goth-influenced in both sound and image, Momento Mori UK never resorted to cliche. With a sound drawing from influences as diverse as The Chameleons, The Sisters of Mercy, and the Pixies, this band sounded like no-one else.

By the late-80's their profile was at a high. By that time they were playing gigs in continental Europe, to crowds of up to 2000 people. They also played gigs behind the Iron Curtain, (where beer was still 2p a pint!!)

In 1991 the band were featured in Mick Mercer's infamous "Gothic Rock" book. And they finally got a vinyl release, which supplemented their numerous demo tapes.

But then during 1992, and 200 gigs later, it all imploded. Debts accrued, musical differences, the usual dramas; these factors all helped to nail the coffin lid firmly shut.

But fast-forward to 2007..... and in celebration of the 20th anniversary since it all began, Momento Mori rose from the ashes... Complete with original members from the 80's, exciting gigs, and even new material. 2007 marked this unique and exciting band's final ReBirth...

And 2008 will see further evolution, including more gigs, and a brand-new studio CD.

Musta Paraati [Fin]

Musta Paraati ("Black Parade") were a short-lived goth-rock band in the early/mid-80s who managed to release just two albums, Peilitalossa ("In The House Of Mirrors") and Käärmeet("The Snakes") before splitting up around 1984. The CD release of 2001 compiles the original Peilitalossa album, the "Johtaja/Jää" ("The Leader/Ice") single and a few tracks from the Käärmeet album.

The original vocalist Jore Vastelin died in 1993. The other singers of Musta Paraati were General Njassa (just on the "Johtaja/Jää" single) and Epe Kronholm, who sings on the Käärmeet album.

Neils Children [UK]

Neils Children (occasionally written NEiLS CHiLDREN) are an English three-piece post-punk outfit who formed in 1999 at Harlow College in Essex, where members John Linger (guitar/vocals), Brandon Jacobs (drums) and Tom Hawkins (bass/vocals) were then studying. The band's name came from Linger's obsession with 1960s proto-punk band John's Children; 'Neil' was the nickname of bassist Hawkins.

Primarily playing freakbeat-inspired music, the band performed several gigs on the London Mod scene as well as performing in the Harlow Square Rock Contest. In 2000 Hawkins quit the band for unknown reasons, and went on to become a successful sound engineer for The Subways. Replacement bassist, James Hair, was recruited and the band decided to move to London.

They have since played many shows in London, Southend, Brighton and many other cities, notably playing the Insomniacs Ball in London in 2006, and the popular London Calling Festival in Amsterdam. To this date, they have released an 8-track mini album and a string of singles on several different indie music labels. Their 2004 single 'I Hate Models' has become something of an underground hit and was included on an XFM compilation; it is currently still the song for which they are best known, despite its exclusion from their live show. More recently, in December 2005 bassist James Hair was replaced by Keith Seymour (formerly of Hope of the States), and a shift in their sound has been notable since this change.

In 2007, the band received attention in the wake of the critical and commercial explosion of The Horrors, with whom they toured in April. The two bands share personal connections, as John Linger is a friend of Rhys 'Spider' Webb, and there are similarities in the two bands' dress sense and appearance (although less so between their music).

Albums:

"Demand The Impossible" (2000 / un-released)
"Change/Return/Success" (2004 / Soft City Recordings)
"Pop:Aural" (2008 / un-released)

Ultranoir [Fin]

Started as an ambitious pop group UltraNoir got influences from shoegaze and post-rock to early eighties post-punk acts such as Joy Division and The Cure with shades of Sisters of Mercy or Bauhaus. These elements blended with political lyrics rather similar with acts like Crisis, PiL and Manic Street Preachers.

Right from the start UltraNoir's themes considered bleak visions of fascism, globalisation, social classes, sexism and existential complications of western moral codes over dreamy melody streams and laconic vocals. On the other side Anton's sentences bring out hope and struggling towards better.

As a statement the first Single Reach Me, Helen Keller (2006) brought out cruel dance tunes stitched to haunting synth lines and anti-escapist words reaching chart position #4 in Finland.Within years of touring and changing line-ups UltraNoir grew slowly closer to more danceable yet punkier ways. The Cureish guitars and long song structures of the debut album Suffer No Fiction dropped off while tempos gained more beats per minute.

Murmansk [Fin]

Murmansk is a Helsinki based indie band. The band's music can be described as dark-edged, distorted and guitar-driven indie rock.

The sound the band have is strongly linked to the sound being made at the turn of the 1990s - shoegaze rock. But this isn't swirly guitars and dreamy soundscapes - the band have a rock'n'roll heart and if you like bands like Curve, Autolux and Televise you could well find the music that Murmansk make appealing.
